FAQ

What is fencing?

Fencing is a fast-paced Olympic sport that combines athleticism, strategy, coordination, and quick decision-making. Fencers learn how to attack, defend, move efficiently, and outthink their opponent in a safe and controlled environment.

Do I need any fencing experience to get started?

Not at all! Our introductory and beginner programs are designed specifically for people who have never fenced before. We’ll teach you everything you need to know, starting with the basics.

What age can someone start fencing?

Fencing can be enjoyed by children, teens, and adults. Our programs are organized by age and experience level so students can learn in an environment appropriate for their development and goals.

Do I need to be athletic to start fencing?

No. You don’t need to already be in great shape or have previous sports experience. Fencing helps develop balance, coordination, agility, endurance, and confidence as you learn.

Is fencing safe?

Yes. Modern fencing places a strong emphasis on safety. Fencers wear protective equipment, and fencing weapons are designed specifically for the sport. Students are also taught proper technique, equipment use, and safety procedures from the beginning.

What equipment do I need for my first class?

Beginners generally do not need to purchase a complete set of fencing equipment before trying the sport. We’ll let you know what equipment is available and what you should bring before your first class.

What should I wear to my first fencing class?

Wear comfortable athletic clothing that allows you to move freely, along with clean athletic shoes. Long athletic pants are recommended. Avoid jeans, sandals, boots, or restrictive clothing.

What are the three types of fencing?

There are three weapons in modern fencing: foil, epee, and saber. Each has different target areas and rules, giving each weapon its own style and strategy.

Does Rainier Elite offer private lessons?

Yes. Private lessons provide individualized instruction and allow a coach to focus on a fencer’s specific technique, tactics, strengths, and areas for improvement.

How are private lessons different from group classes?

Group classes allow students to learn skills, practice drills, fence with different partners, and develop alongside teammates. Private lessons provide focused one-on-one coaching. Many developing competitive fencers benefit from a combination of both.

Is fencing good exercise?

Yes! Fencing develops cardiovascular endurance, leg strength, balance, coordination, speed, flexibility, and reaction time while keeping participants mentally engaged.

What benefits can kids gain from fencing?

In addition to physical skills, fencing encourages focus, patience, problem-solving, self-discipline, sportsmanship, confidence, and learning how to respond positively to both success and setbacks.

Can I try fencing before deciding whether to continue?

Yes! An introductory class is a great way to experience fencing, meet the coaches, learn some basic skills, and decide whether fencing is right for you.
